2 from Alexander 2. from J.& Winthop 1 from Navarch 1 from Beluja 1 from Karluk. Took 3 sleds and about 20 dogs. Fritz, Harry and Charlie arrived. Brought 5 Deer and 26 Deer Skins. Charlie and Ketchictuck arrived Brought 10 Rabbits. also reported Shed Tilton as lost during the gale.

Thursday Jan. 23d

Friday Jan. 24th
Calms and light but variable airs. Clear. Overhauling stores, 2 kegs Butter missing. An attempt. was made to break into Capt Leavitts store house during the night. The search party returned with Shed Tilton. Slightly frostbitten about the hands.
Saturday Jan. 25th
Calm first part. Latter part a strong E.S.E. wind. Clear and smoky. A party of eight started in pursuit of the deserters. The Captains of the vessels held a meeting on Stmr. Beluga. Resolved to put an armed patrol on nights from 7 oclock till daylight. Composed of officers. Also to keep the men in after 10 O'clock and to offer a reward of 50 Dollars for any men brought back
that may desert after this date.
Saturday Jan. 26th
A very strong E.S.E. breeze. Clear. and Snow drifting heavily.
Monday Jan. 27th
Calms, and light Westerly airs. Clear. The search party returned. Gave it up. thought they had too much start. The Hume’s ice house was broken into since last they were there.
Tuesday Jan. 28th
Calm. Clear.Iaaka and family arrived. I Red fox. Another search party started in pursuit of the runaways, composed of West, Curry, David Mogg and Cahill accompanied by two Indians.
Wednesday Jan. 29th
A strong breeze from the E.S.E. Clear and misty. Gave the cook a 'licking' for threatening the steward with a cleaver. also to keep my promise to him in regard To any more trouble in the galley

February 1st
A very strong W.N.W. wind Cloudy and misty.

Calms and light Westerly airs. Clear. Iaacka left for a hunt.
Monday Feb. 3d
Calms and light Westerly airs. Cloudy and Clear. Amputated about a third of three fingers on Shed Tiltons right hand. Incisions just inside of outer joints. Fore, middle and ring fingers. Under the influence of Chloroform 37 minutes. Took twenty five minutes to do the job. Capt. Leavitts
did the cutting.
Tuesday Feb. 4th
A moderate W.N.W. gale till 2.30 P.M. Then came on with terrific force. Cloudy and snow drifting heavily. Had to give Tilton Laudanum and morphine during the night. Resting easy today.
Wednesday Feb. 5th
A very strong W.N.W. gale which died away to a light breeze latter part. Cloudy and Clear Picked over our Potatoes.
Thursday Feb. 6th
Calm and light but variable airs. Clear, Cloudy and misty. The search party returned brought back 4 of the men and all of the stolen goods.
Friday Feb 7th 

A strong W.N.W. breeze first part. Latter part calm and light Easterly air. Held a meeting of the Captains on Stmr. Beluga. Gave an order for 500 dollars as a reward to the search party that broke up the Runaway Crowd. Each Captain giving his proportional part.

Middle toe just inside the first joint Two smaller toes on the third joint backs. Gap formed by the flesh on the top of the foot bottom being dead and had to take the flesh off

A moderate N.N.W. breeze. Latter part calm. Clear Cloudy and snowing lightly.
Saturday Mar. 14th
A terrific Gale which gradually died away the latter part. Cloudy, Clear, Cloudy and snowing lightly. A “Hoodlum Party” on board of the Hume. Had a very hard time in getting the Ladies home.
Sunday Mar. 15th
Calms and light but variable breezes. Clear. 3 Itcallic sleds arrived just after dark.
Monday Mar. 16th
Calms and light airs first part. Latter Part a strong gale from the W.N.W. Carting ice.
Tuesday Mar. 17th
Calms and light but variable airs. Clear and Cloudy. 12 men deserted the ships last night. Beluga 4. N. Light 2 Fearless 1 J and Winthrop 1 Belvedere 2 Wanderer 1 Jeannette 1. A search party started after them shortly after daylight. Two reports came in during the day. They had held up two sleds and stolen all of the dogs and various other articles.
Wednesday Mar. 18th
Calm first part. Latter part. a moderate W.N.W. Gale Clear Cloudy and misty. The Officers came up with the runaways about 3. P.M. The runaways fired on them and went on as the search party was two  small.
Thursday Mar. 19
A strong W.N.W. gale Clear and snow drifting heavily. The Officers returned at the fire but as there were only 5 against ten did not capture them. Held a meeting of Captains. Charged the orders all sailors to be on board and doors barred by Eight O.Clock. also limited the grounds
for exercise.
Friday Mar. 20th
Calm first part. Latter part a strong E.N.E. wind. Clear. Myself and two men forward sick with bowel complaint. Put the bounds out for the sailors.
Saturday Mar. 21st
A strong E.N.E. breeze first part. Latter part moderate W.N.W. gale. Clear.
Sunday Mar. 22d
Calms and light but variable airs. Clear. Flanders, Mr. Cottle Mr. David and One Indian started today after the Deserters. with intentions of probably going to the Rampart House after Them.
Monday Mar. 23d
Calm First part Latter part a moderate E.S.E. breeze. Clear. Ocpulluc Harry and Sapsuk arrived
brought 10 deer. Cuhlo arrived. The Stakes were taken down today. No instructions on asking for permission. The runaways sent a message in to the effect that if anyone came after them. They would get a warm reception.

Tuesday Mar. 24th
A strong E.S.E. wind till 2 A.M. then suddenly changed to the N.W. a moderate gale. Clear and misty.
Wednesday Mar. 25th
Calm and light airs from the S.W. Clear. Fitting out sleds Carting ice. Banking melting on the

Starboard side. Charlie Kanaka quite sick with fever and pains across the stomach and back.
Thursday Mar. 26th
Calms and light airs from the Westerly. Cloudy and spitting snow. Sent out 3 sleds by Sapsuk, Charlie and Jeannie. Capt. Leavitts and party arrived at 4 A.M. Messrs. Hoffman and Howland
also came with them. They brought back six of the runaways. One [Kenneth?] of the Northern Light was killed, by an Indian, Sango by name. One Fitzgerald of the Stmr. Jeannette was shot in the region of the abdomen and was brought
in on a sled. Three men belonging to Stmr. Beluga were brought back all right. Burke, Patsy. ODorrity, and [French?] Fischer of the Northern Light and one of Stmr. Belvedere Joe Fisets were also brought in. Three of them were not in the fight as they had gone farther inland to look for Toboggans and snowshoes and the other two escaped to the hills. They had stopped three sleds and stolen most of the dogs and also guns and ammunition Messers Hoffmans and Howland came They looted , and what they did not want had destroyed. They admitted that they had not received any treatment but what they deserved. also was a witness and interpreted the Indian Sanjo's Deposition. Kennedy fired three shots at him before he returned his fire. The first shot he fired broke his leg the second killed him and afterwards put other shots into his body. He was rolled up in a canvass and put on a rack and left there. The Indian Sanjo said that Kennedy's shots came very close to him the last one he could feel the wind of it as it passed his head. After his leg was broken he fired three shots at him while in a sitting position. The depositions of some of the others was taken this P.M.

This P.M. I took the bandages off of the wounded man. Found the bullet hole near the spine and about half way between the lower ribs and the Pelvis Bone. the outside pole covered by a dry scab. His clothes showed very little hemorrhage. The bandage being

perfectly dry and only two to there dry blood stains. Did not seem to be suffering any but could not roll over or move his legs but very little without assistance. Showed some signs of fever. Drank lots of water and pulse up to 100. His privates were drawn up nearly out of sight and had quite hard work to pass his water. but not much
appetite. Had no reason to complain of his treatment and thought that he got no more than he deserved. The Reports of the various participants say that things were quite lively around there for a while although some of the men they did not catch till nearly night. and the fight came off about 8 o'clock in the morning. They brought back everything they had with them except one Rifle, and one shotgun which som of the other five have, 8 Rifles 2 shotguns were the arms? that runaways had.
Friday Mar. 27th
A moderate breeze from the W.N.W. Clear and misty. Fitting out Cudlo.
Saturday Mar. 28th
A moderate gale from the W.N.W. which died away to a calm the  latter part. Clear. Dressed Fitzgerald wound this a.m. It had opened. Pressed about 1/2 pint of pus from it. The course of the bullet was down at a slight angle. I think under the 7th vertebrate. Can not feel it above the bone. Pulse 116 a.m. 9.[?] Cudlo. left for the River.
Sunday Mar. 29th
A light E.S.E. breeze. Clear. Fitzgerald easier Pulse 92 a.m. 100 p.m. Wound still suppurating.
Stood on his feet this morning. Na’tuck arrived with 3 Deer.
Monday Mar. 30th

Calm and light Easterly airs. Cloudy snowing lightly and Clear. Cleaned out run and

overhauled the storehouse. Fitzgerald improving. pulse 100. Probed for the ball. Found it penetrated to the Pelvis Bone then glanced up and I think is lodged near the 2d vertebrate above the Coccyx. Did not get it.
Tuesday Mar. 31st
Calms and light Easterly airs. Clear. Carted a load of ice Fitzgerald easier. Large amount of
suppuration last night. pulse 100. Fitted out a sled for Ketchictuck and Nanmuck.
Wednesday Apr. 1st
Calms and light but variable airs. Clear and misty. President of the “Hoodlums” (Mackenna)
was stuffed with cotton the 12. M. Fitzgerald very feverish. turn for the worse This a.m. Pulse 118.
Thursday Apr. 2nd
A strong W.N.W. breeze which increased to a moderate gale the latter part. Clear, Cloudy and snow drifting heavily. Charlie, Sapsuka and Jeanie arrived at 11 a.m. Brought 16 Deer. Pork Dinner for the Hoodlums on Stmr. Belvedere. Fitzgerald easy. Pulse 108. A slight swelling showing near the backbone also some inflammation near the bullet hole.
Friday Apr. 3d
A moderate W.N.W. gale Clear but snow drifting heavily Fitzgerald easy a.m. but very feverish P.M. pulse 120. Large amount of pus ran during the day.
Saturday Apr. 4th
A moderate W.N.W. gale which gradually moderated the latter part. Cloudy and misty and Clear. Fitzgerald about the same, but begins to talk of dying Pulse

Tuesday Apr. 28th
Calms and light but variable airs. Clear. Cutting out the rudder and propeller Carting away the Banking. The Fearless and Freeman rose from their icebeds. Large body of water off N. side of Island.
Wednesday Apr. 29th
A strong gale from the W. Clear and cloudy. Jags arrived 2 deer. Fitzgerald improving quite Rapidly. Suppurating very little.
Thursday Apr. 30th
A very strong W.N.W. gale which moderated to a strong breeze, latter part. Clear and misty. Jags left. Fitted out Sapsuke and Charlie for a hunt. Two Itkillic sleds arrived, one on the Wanderer One to the J. & Winthrop.
Friday May 1st
Light and variable breezes. Cloudy, misty and snowing lightly. Cutting out the stern. Let the water in. Flooded all around the stern. Sapsuke and Charlie left to tend the hunters.
Saturday May 2d
Light breeze from the E.S.E. Cloudy and spitting snow. Finished cutting out the stern. Ocpulluc, Ocudleyak, Iak arrived from the River. Ice just 5 feet thick.

Got steam on the boiler. Blew the whistle.
Friday May 8th

Ballasting ship. Saw quite a number of snowbirds. Capt. Leavitts and myself gave a dance
in the house. Did not invite the S's.

Friday June 19th

Saturday June 20th
A strong W.N.W. gale. Cloudy and a raining first part. A very high tide and ice moved in shore a few feet. Amputated the right arm of Mr.West of Stmr. Navarch at the shoulder joint just outside. Found about 4 inches of the bone shattered and the hole had lots of pieces of bone scatured about also sheds of flannel &c. Flesh badly powder burnt. Under the influence of Chloroform
One hour and fifty minutes. Highest pulse 95. In coming to felt faint and weak. but no vomiting.
Dissected West's arm, found 6 inches of bone left 7 to the longest point. also found 3 slivers of bone 2 ½ inches inside of the end and flesh very Bloodshot and dark. Just 5 inches of bone shot away the charge going Diagonally across the arm. Left about 1 inch of bone outside of shoulder joint.

Calms and light but variable airs. Cloudy rain and fog. Steamed about 1 ½ hours anchored close to Pullen Island. Mr. Mogg returned. Indians shot 13 deer. Brought 4 to the ship. also 100 Fish.

A very strong breeze from the W.N.W. which died away latter part. Cloudy.  At Anchor half way between Pullen and Hooper Islands. Steamed about 1 hour. Got under way under sail at 4 P.M.

Friday, July 24th

Calms and light airs first part Latter part a moderate Easterly breeze. Cloudy fog squall and clear. At anchor off Pullen Island. Had to fleet for ice twice. At 12.40 P.M. started to the Eastward under steam. Passed Pullen Island 1.30 about a mile off shore. Steering from N. by E. to E by N. Passed inside of the shoals, 2 fathom being the smallest water, Carrying 3 and 2 ¾ fathoms most of the time. Course most of the time E. by N. Ice piled up quite high on Newport Shoal.

Saturday July 25th

A moderate breeze from the S. E. First part Latter part hauled to the W. by N. and increased to a moderate gale.  Cloudy, rain  Clear and cloudy. Steaming, anchored off Token Point from 8 to 10.15 a.m. Struck on a shoal a few moments after getting under way. but backed off easily. Steamed till 1.30 P.M. Then anchored off Warren Point or near it. Had to fleet for ice once. Steamed in shore. about 1 hour. Bottom very uneven going from 3 to 5 and from 5 to 3 again very quickly.

Sunday July 26th

Gradual dying away of yesterdays breezes. Latter part light breeze from the N. Cloudy and clear. At anchor off Warren Point. Sent a boat ashore, but got nothing.

Monday July 27th

Light N. E. breeze first part. Latter part hauled to the S. W. and increased to a strong breeze. Varied to the W. Clear. Cloudy and raining. Steamed 1 hour Steering N. by E. struck on a shoal but backed off. Anchored rest of the day. Shoal about 5 miles off shore and only 2 ft of water in shoalest spot. Beare S. by W. by Compass from what I call, Warren Point. Go from 3 ¼ fathom to 11 ft. In about 110 yds. All of the Stmrs here. Ice moving very slowly to the Eastward.

Tuesday July 28th

Calms and light airs first part. Latter part a moderate breeze varying from S to S.W. Cloudy At anchor. but moved a little way twice. Sent Mr. Leigh and Indians deer hunting. Saw about a hundred from the ship.  Ice moving very slow. No current.

Thursday July 30th

A moderate S. W. breeze first part. Latter part Strong West wind. Cloudy and fog latter part. Got Steam at 10 a.m. and went up and helped haul Stmr. Hume off a shoal. Stmrs. Karluk and Freeman assisting. Arrived back to Anchorage at 4 a.m. Mr. Leigh and Indians returned  8 deer.

Steamed to the Eastward about 6 miles. Anchored off “Cogairuc.”

Friday July 31st

A moderate breeze from the W. varying to W.N.W. Cloudy and fog by squalls. At anchor off South West End of Mckinly Bay. Had to fleet for ice 3 times.

Saturday Aug. 1st

A moderate W.N.W. breeze first part. Latter part calm and light Easterly airs. Cloudy, fog  and clear At anchor till  P.M. then got under way and steamed to the Eastward. Struck a small strip of ice and in going  through it at 10.15 P.M. the shaft broke. in the sleeve. Stmrs M. D. Hume towed me in shore, and anchored. Stmr’s Beluga and J. H. Freeman, came alongside and

hoisted our stern out but could not get it high enough to see anything. Gettingready for the Hume to tow to the Island.

Sunday Aug 2d

A moderate breeze varying E.S,E. to S.E. by E. Clear and cloudy At 9.25.a.m. Started for Herschel Island in tow of Stmr. Hume. At 6.45 P.M. had to let go as something was wrong with her machinery. Hooked on again at 3 P.Mi In passing of line, collided with] her bow boat and broke a couple of cranes. Steering about S.W. by W. till 7 P.M. then swung off to S by W ½ W.

Spoke Bark Wanderer off Pelly Island. Fitted out Ocpulluc Nanmuck and Killie and let them go ashore before leaving. Dumped the ballast from aft and started to take the coal out of the bunkers.

Monday Aug. 3

Light S. E. breeze. till 9 A.M. Then a strong W wind for a few hours. calm. And Latter part a

moderate breeze from the E. Cloudy, rain   clear and cloudy. In tow of the Hume till 10.40 a.m. Laid until 4.45 then took us in tow again and anchored off Sabine Point at 1.40 P.M. Heavy ice off Kay Point in to the land. Hume had to stop to repair.

Tuesday Aug 4th

Calm and Light breezes from the Eastward Clear  cloudy and clear.  At anchor till 9.15 a.m. then sailed along the coast about 15 miles  anchored at 4 a.m. Laid till 10 P.M. Then the Hume hooked onto us again. Passed Kay Point at 2 P.M. and anchored in Pauline Cove at 4.40 P.M. Hauled alongside of the beach and moored.

Wednesday Aug 5th

A strong breeze from the E.  Clear. Trimming ship. and hauled around stern on to the beach. Got her up enough to get the blades off the hub. Blacksmith welded the anchor stock.

Thursday  Aug. 6th

A strong breeze from the E. till midnight. At. 4 a.m. a moderate gale came on from the N. W. but died away again the latter part. Cloudy, fog and clear. Had to let go from the beach and lay to the anchor. Took the inside piece of the shaft out. Broke short off. Drilling holes to Repair it.

Stmr. Hume left at 11.30 P.M.

Friday Aug. 7th

Calms and light airs first part. Latter part a strong E.S.E. breeze, which suddenly let go and shifted to the W. at 5P.M. Clear and Cloudy. Hauled off and hauled on again on the high tide. at 5 P.M. the hub out of water Drilling and chipping the other ends Tried to jack the hub off but failed.

Saturday Aug. 8th

A strong breeze varying from N.W. to W. N. W. Cloudy and raining first part.  Started a fire around the hub, but failed to start it. Found a key that we did not know of. Waiting for the tide to fall again.

Sunday Aug 7th

Calms and light Easterly airs Clear.  Built another fire under the hub. but failed to get off. Let fire go out the [sic] chipped the flange of the sleeve  off. about 8 inches. and at 11.30 P.M. had had hub and shaft out. Took it to the blacksmith shop. Had very little trouble in getting the hub off. Started drilling.

Monday Aug. 10th

Calm first part. Latter part a moderate N.W. wind. Clear. Finished drilling and squaring up for the joint. Pumped ship taking nearly all day.

Tuesday  Aug. 11th

Calms and light Easterly airs. Clear. Joined the shaft and riveted it. And took it the shop for the sleeve. About 20 Itkillic Indians arrived.

Wednesday Aug. 12th

Calms and light Easterly airs. Clear. Finished the shaft and got it back into place at 9 P.M. Hauled off the beach and trimming ship. rest of the day

Thursday  Aug. 13th

Calm first part. Latter part light breeze varying from S.E. to S. Clear. Finished trimming ship. Hauled alongside of Stmr. Orca. and took 30 tons coal. also took 60 boxes. Potatoes and 5 of Onions from Stmr. Thrasher, 2 Bbls. Beer. Left Pauline Cove at 10.15 P.M. under steam Steered about E.N.E. till 5 P.M. then swung off to N. by E.  Lots of ice in the Basin. The Stmr. Thrasher arrived at 8 A.M. and Orca and Narwhal at 2.45 A.M.

Friday Aug. 14th

A moderate gale from the W. N.W. which died away to a light breeze and hauled to the N.N.E. Latter part. Cloudy.  Steaming and carrying all sail. Most of the day. Steering from N. by E. to

E.N.E. as the ice allowed. Spoke Stmr. Jeannette at 10.15 A.M. Passed Pullen Island at 1 P.M. and Cape Dalhousie at 2.15 P.M.

Saturday Aug. 15th

Calm and light Easterly breeze first part. Latter part a strong E. S. E. breeze. Cloudy, heavy fog and clear. Arrived at Baillie Island at 7.20 A.M. Laid till 5.30 A.M. then steamed off shore and tied up to the ice. Laid rest of the day. Gave Stmr M. D. Hume 8 boxes Potatoes 1 Onion Bark Wanderer 10 boxes Potatoes 1 onions. Also Hume 1 Bbl Beer.

Sunday Aug. 16th  

A strong E.S.E. breeze first part. Latter part hauled to the S. then W.S.W. Cloudy,  clear   and fog latter part. Tied to a cake of ice off Cape Bathurst. Steamed about 1 ½ hours. Lowered for a whale at 5.15.a.m. Mr. Flanders struck at 8.45 P.M. Commenced cutting at 9.52. and Finished 10.15 P.M.Scraped the Bone.

Monday  Aug. 17th

A strong W.N.W. wind for an hour then died away to a light breeze first part. Latter part hauled to the N.E. Heavy fog most of the day. Cloudy and Clear. Steamed about 3 hours. Tied to the ground ice and at anchor off Baillie Island. Got under weigh under sail and stood off shore at 4 P.M.

Tuesday  Aug. 18th

A moderate breeze from the E.N.E. Latter part hauled to the E.S.E. Cloud fog and Clear..

Steamed about 4 hours. Tied to ice off shore till 1.20 P.M. Then steamed in shore and anchored

at 4 P.M. Current running very swift to the W. One whale seen today by Stmr. Navarch.

Wednesday Aug. 19th

Light and variable breezes first part. A strong W.N.W. gale latter part. Cloudy fog and rain. also lightning.  At anchor off Baillie Island.

Thursday Aug. 20th

A strong W.N.W. breeze first part. Latter part calm and Light Easterly air. Cloudy  snowing. And clear. Got under way and sailed to the Eastward anchored again at 9 A.M. Steamed about an hour. Lowered for a whale at 4.30 A.M. Only saw him once after lowering.

Friday Aug. 21st

Calms and light airs first part. Latter part a strong gale from the W. Cloudy and snow squalls. Steamed up to “Whale Cliff” and tied to the ice but had to go inshore and anchor. Laid till 7 P.M. then steamed back to Baillie Island. anchoring at 11 P.M. Nearly all the vessels came in. Ice going by very rapidly.

Saturday Aug. 22d 

Gradual dying away of yesterdays gale. Latter part calm. At anchor off Baillie Island. Pack ice only 3 or 4 miles off shore.

Sunday  Aug. 23d

Calm first part. Latter part a light breeze from the E.N.E. Cloudy and snow squalls. At anchor off Baillie Island. 9 of the vessels left to go west. Ice came in on to the North side of the Island. Very small water around. Kylie, one of the Indian crew deserted.

Monday  Aug. 24th

Calms and light Easterly airs. Latter part A moderate E.N.E. breeze. Cloudy and clear. At Anchor off Baillie Island till 5.50 A.M. Then steamed towards the ice at 6.00 A.M. Started to the Westward steering S. by E. In passing through a small strip of ice struck a small peic stern on

breaking it a small peice went unde rthe ship  struck the propeller and broke the shaft again. About 1030 P.M. Soon as struck the ice gave the bells to stop.  Anchored, and in dropping the Port anchor it unshackled at the 15 fathom shackle. Got it again by the buoy rope. About 12 M. Stmr M. D. Hume took us in tow and started for the “Island” Steering S.S.W.

Tuesday Aug. 25th

Calms and light but variable airs till 8 P.M. then a moderate breeze from the N.N. [?] Cloudy  rain squalls, and fog after 3 P.M.  In tow of Stmr. Hume. Steering about S.S.W.

part began to die away again. Cloudy  Heavy fog rain hail and snow. In tow of the Hume till 11 a.m. then anchored, laid till 3.15 towed till 9 P.M. then anchored off King Point. Had to fleet for ice 3 times and at 5.30. P.M. anchored off Sabine Point.

Light breeze from the N.N.W. till latter part then calm and light N.E. winds. Cloudy snowing and fog. At anchor off Sabine Point at 9.55 P.M. Hume took us in tow but anchored again at 12.20 P.M. Too much ice butgoing slowly off shore. Current running [west?]

A moderate breeze from the E.N.E. Cloudy and heavy fog. Finished the shaft put it back.

Trimmed ship and turned the propeller over at 4.15 P.M. Everything worked fine

Friday  Sept. 4th [1896.]

A strong E.N.E. wind. Cloudy and Heavy fog. Moored to the beach. Discharged my crew and delivered up the ship to Capt Leavitts. Most of the men Transferred to Stmr. Balaena. Some of them stayed. So ends this voyage.
