Saturday Aug. 22 d

Lowered for Whales at 8.30 A.M. Mr. Straton struck about 11 A.M. Finished cutting about 2 P.M.Three other boats chased rest of the day.

Whales head of Bone estimated at 2000 lbs Longest bone 12 ft. Just at night Steamed in shore and gammed Stmr. Beluga

Sunday Aug. 23

Steamed to Herschel Island and anchored about 9 A.M.

Monday Aug. 24 th

Releived [sic] Mr. G.W. Bassett as mate of Stmr. Newport. Found everything in good condition. Hauled alongside of Stmr. Jeanie about 2P.M. Officers all releived [sic]. Mr. Hart and Kirk in charge of Engine Room. A strong breeze from the W.N.W.

Friday Aug 25

Light and variable breezes. Laying alongside of Stmr. Jeanie. Taking in coal and stores. Cook and steward also boys transferred. Broke out the Fore Hold and took account of stock. Some men at work on the House.Crew of the Newport shipped on Stmr. Jeanie.

Saturday Aug. 26th

Light and variable winds. Some rainsqualls [sic]. Lying alongside of Stmr. Jeanie Discharging The Jeanie. Took 80 tons of Coal on the Newport. Received some stores. At work also on the House. Crew all transferred 37 men, officers and sailors. also 4 natives.

Sunday Aug 27

Calms and Light airs. Lying alongside of the Jeanie. At work building the House. Discharging the Jeanie.Put up the davits for the S.B. Boat. and receiving stores &c. Steerage Boy ran away.Stmr. Grampus arrived.

Monday Aug. 28th

A moderate breeze from N.N. E. Latter [part?] light and variable winds. Left Herschel Island at 10 A.M. Steering N.N.E. Raised Whales at 9 P.M. Chased remainder of the day. Shipped Edward Arey as Prev. Boatsteerer. Saw the Stmr. J.H. Freeman.

Tuesday Aug. 29

A strong breeze from the W. Cruising under sail Lowered for whales and Mr. Mulligan Struck at 8.30 A.M.Lowered again, and Mr. Mogg Struck at 12.30 P.M.Cut both whales and lowered again

Wednesday Aug. 30th 

A strong breeze from the W.N.W. First Part, Latter part Light and variable winds. Fog squalls. Cruising under sail. Anchored during the night. Steamed about 3 hours. Lowered for whales at 7 A.M. Mr. Mulligan struck at 8.10 and finished Cutting at 10.30 A.M. Lowered again at 8.30 P.M. Chased till 2 P.M. Spoke Stmr. Grampus.

Thursday Aug. 31s

Light breeze from E.N.E. with fog squalls. Cruising under sail. Lowered for whales at 6.30 P.M. Mr. Mulligan struck at 11 and finished cutting at 1.45 P.M. Lowered again at 2 P.M. Mr. Allen struck at 2.20 and finished cutting at 6 P.M.

Friday Sept. 1st

A moderate gale from the N.E. Lying to under Mainsail, Jib, And fore topsail. Heavy sea running. Commenced steaming about 4 P.M. Saw a whale but to rugged to lower. 8 Stmrs. in sight.

Saturday Sept.2nd

Gradual dying away of yesterdays gale. Latter part light airs and calms Cruising under sail. Steamed about 2 hours. Chased whales from 7.30 to 11.30 P.M. and from 5 P.M. till end of the day. Filled the water tank.

Sunday Sept. 3

Calms and light airs. Laying around under sail. Steamed about 5 hours Lowered for whales at 6.30 P.M. Chased till 12 m. Opened the slop chest.

Monday Sept. 4t

A moderate breeze from the E.N.E. Cruising under sail Lowered for whales at 9.40 P.M. Chased till 3 P.M. Whales working to windward fast. 12 Stmrs. In sight.

Tuesday Sept. 5th

A strong breeze from the N.E. Snowing nearly all day. Cruising under sail. At 12 m. Steered off S.S.E. and run remainder of the day. Lowered for a whale at 6 P.M. Chased till 9. Whales working to windward quickly. Spoke the Stmr. Jeannette

Wednesday Sept 6th

Started in with a strong N.E. wind but hauled to the N.W. latter part. A moderate breeze Cruising under sail till 8 P.M. then Steamed back toward Hooper Island. Stopped steaming at 2.40 P.M. Saw 4  whales but going quickly so did not lower. Saw 4 Steamers.

Thursday Sept 7rh

Calm. About 3 P.M. a light N.E. wind Steamed from 6 A.M. to 8 P.M. Saw 4 whales in the morning Lowered for 1 at 12.30 P.M. and Chased till end of the day. A light breeze from the N.E. Steaming till 3.45 A.M. Lowered for whales at 6.30 P.M. Mr. Mogg struck at 9 P.M. Lowered again and Mr. Mogg struck at 1.45 P.M. I struck another at 2.30 P.M. Finished cutting all of them at 5.30 P.M.

Saturday Sept. 

A very strong breeze from the E.N.E.  with fog and snow squalls. Lowered for whales at 7 P.M.I struck at 8.15 P.M. and finished cutting at 11.15 P.M. While cutting one of the falls parted letting the body go by the run. No serious damage.

Sunday Sept. 10h

A moderate breeze from the N.E. Fog squalls the latter part. Spoke the Stmr. Beluga and put mail on board of her. Lowered for whales at 6.15 P.M. Mr. Allen struck at 6.35 and finished cutting at 9.15 P.M. Lowered again at 3.40 and Mr. Hancock struck at 4.20.P.M. Finished Cutting at end of the day.

Monday Sept. 11h

Light breeze from the E.N.E.  with fog till 1.30 P.M. Cruising under sail Steamed from 6 to 10.45 P.M. Lowered for whales at 12.45 P.M. I struck at 2.40 and finished cutting at 4.35 P.M.

Tuesday Sept. 12th

A moderate E.N.E. wind which increased to a strong breeze. Fog and rain first part. Lowered for whales at 10.30 P.M. Chased till 2 P.M. Whales gallied and going in all directions

Wednesday Sept. 13th

Started in with a strong E.N.E. wind Latter part gradually died away and hauled to the N.N.E. A heavy fog. Filled the water tank. At 9.40 P.M. cleared for a whale. Lowered for whales and Mr. Mulligan struck at 10.15 and finished cutting at 12.50 P.M. Frank Wolke, Boatsteerer, laid up with a sore hand. Edward Arey steering me.

Thursday Sept.14th

Calms and light airs with a heavy fog and snow squalls. till 3 P.M. then a strong breeze sprang up from the W.N.W. Cruising under sail. Spoke the Stmr. Orca and put letters aboard.

Friday Sept 15th

A very strong E.N.E. wind with a heavy swell. Also fog and snow squalls. Lowered for whales at 7 P.M. I struck at 9.03 P.M. Whale run to wind ward with me for 7 ½ hours before I killed him.Took him alongside at 6 P.M. Slacked him off with a hawser as it was to rugged to cut Edward Arey struck the whale for me. A very strong W.N.W. wind with fog and snow squalls first part. Latter part died away to a light breeze. Hauled the whale alongside at 4 A.M. Finished cutting at 9 P.M. Martin Blair gave Thomas George $20.00 to cut the head off for him. Lowered again at 10.15 P.M. and Mr. Mulligan struck at 10.30 and finished cutting at 12.30 P.M. Edward Arey shipped as Boatsteerer  dating from the 28th of August. Light breeze from the W.N.W. which increased to a strong breeze latter part with snow squalls. Young ice making around decks. At anchor during the night. Cruising under sail. Commenced steaming at 2.45 P.M. and steamed rest of the day. Lowered for whale at 11.30 P.M. I struck at 11.50 and finished Cutting at 2.30 P.M. Mr. Hancock hurt by the whale Kicking him. Spoke Stmrs. Balaena and Karluk.

Monday Sept 16

Light and variable winds first part. Latter part Calm Shut in foggy at 4.30 P.M. Steamed about 5 hours during the day Lowered for a whale at 9 P.M. but died away to a calm andmlost run of him.

Tuesday Sept. 19th

A strong gale from the W. Which died away the latter part to a moderate breeze. Snow squalls. At anchor till 10.30 A.M. then under sail till 3.30 A.M. then steaming and carrying mainsail, jib,and main staysail. Working tack and tack. Saw one whale during the day.

Wednesday Sept. 20th

A moderate gale from the W. With heavy snow squalls Latter part hauled to the N.W. under sail till 11.30 P.M. then began steaming and carrying mainsail jib and staysail. Steering about S.W.

Saturday Sept. 21

A strong N.W. wind with a heavy sea running. Snow squalls. Steamed with fore and aft sails till 10 A.M. then set the topsails. Started again at 4.40 P.M. and anchored in Pauline Cove at 7.45 P.M. At work trimming the ship and shifting stores in the Store house. The whole fleet at anchor here.

Friday Sept. 22d

A strong W.N.W. wind which died away the latter part. Snowing heavily nearly all day. At Anchor. Shifting stores &c.

Saturday Sept. 3th

A strong W.N.W. wind till 9 P.M. then suddenly shifted to the E.S.E. Snowing heavily nearly all day. Building rooms in the alley way for the 3d and 4th officers.

Sunday Sept. 2

A moderate E.N.E. wind which died away to a calm. At 3 P.M. a strong breeze sprang up from the N.W. Snow squalls. At anchor till 4.40 A.M. then started for King Point under steam Steamed off shore from there till came to young ice in patches Started back for the Island Steering compass. Carrying sail part of the day as the wind allowed.

Monday Sept. 25th

Started in with a strong N.W. wind increased to a moderate gale, but moderated again latter part.Snow squalls. Anchored again at Herschel Island at 7:20 A.M. At work straightening up ashore.Building a room for 4th mate

Tuesday Sept. 26th\

A moderate breeze from the E.N.E. Snowing most of the day. At anchor in Pauline Cove. Filled the water tank. Working on the rooms. Cutting sods for the Poop deck and sorting over the stores in the house.

Wednesday Sept. 27th

Light and variable winds first part. Latter part a strong E.N.E. wind. At anchor, but shifted into the  Cove at 12 m. At work sorting storesand trade ashore. Mr. Allen and Capt. Tilton put up the billiards  table.

 Thursday. Sept. 28th

A very strong E. wind which moderated the latter part. Snowing most of the day. At work in the run.and fixing the state rooms. A whales Carcass floated into the Bay.

Friday Sept 29th

Light breeze from the E first part middle and latter part calm and light easterly airs. At anchor Snow squalls. Cutting ice for winters use Building pantry &c

Saturday Sept. 30th

A moderate breeze from the W.N.W. Snowing most of the day. At anchor till 6 A.M. then steamed  over to the mainland. Got 8 boat loads of wood Steamed back again and anchored at 6 P.M. tore down and rebuilt the Starboard Cabin Partitions

Sunday Oct 1st

A moderate breeze from the W.N.W. Spitting Snow At Anchor  Cut ice for winters use At work on the staterooms  Landed the wood.

 Monday Oct. 2d

 Light and variable winds Cloudy. At work on the cabin. Young ice making in the night.

Tuesday  Oct. 3rd

Light breeze from the N.N.W, Cloudy with snow squalls. At work on the cabin Hauled  the Whales Carcass up on the beach  The Stmr. Karluk towed it in.

Wednesday  Oct 4th

]Light and variable airs Cloudy  At work on the cabin. Young ice making and the outer Bay nearly full.

Thursday Oct. 5th

Calm most of the day. Light and variable airs latter part. Cloudy. Ice freezing quickly At work  on the Cabin. Put Port furls on the sails. Frozen in.                                                 

 Friday Oct 6th

A strong E.S.E. wind with snowsqualls first part. Cloudy.  At work on the cabin Sent down cutting gear, crowsnest &c  Steamed alongside of Stmr. Balaena and got water, Filled after tanks, then steamed to position for winter quarters.

Saturday Oct. 7th

 A moderate N.W. wind. Sleet and snow squalls. Cloudy Tore down and rebuilt the   Steerage. Also working on the Capt. room Walking ashore on the ice.

Sunday Oct. 8th

 A moderate N.W. wind Cloudy.  Ice gone in thick                                                            

Monday Oct  9


Calms and light westerly airs. Cloudy. At anchor. Clearing up the holds Housing in after part of the ship. Making dog harnesses.

Tuesday Oct. 10th

 Light breeze from the E.S.E. Clear. Landed 16 heads of Bone. Restowed the run &c.         

Wednesday Oct. 11th

Light breeze varying from N.E. to N.N.W. Cloudy and snowing. Bay frozen over.

Thursday  Oct. 12th

 Light breeze from the S.E. with snow first part. Latter part hauled to the W.N.W,  and  increased to a strong breeze. Ice went out in outer Bay. At work in the cabin  Sodded the poop   deck.

Friday Oct. 13

Calm first part. Latter part a strong N.E. wind Cloudy with heavy snow Frozen in

A strong W.S.W. wind first part  Latter part hauled to the N.W. Cloudy. At work in the  cabin also storehouse Blowed down the boiler. Making dog harnesses.

Sunday Oct. 15th

 Started in with a strong S.E. wind. but latter part, suddenly shifted to the N.W. a strong breeze. Cloudy.

Monday Oct 16th

A moderate N.W. wind which moderated the latter part. Cloudy. Started to house in the  ship.

Tuesday Oct. 17th

 A strong N.W. wind. Clear   At work on the house Getting ice and snow for water Outer Bay clear.

Wednesday Oct. 18th

A strong breeze from the W.N.W. Cloudy and Clear.At work housing the ship. A number of Itcallies arrive from Peel River also Rampart House.

Thursday Oct. 19th

A moderate breeze from the W. Clear and Cloudy. At work on the house also building quarters for the Indians.

Friday Oct. 20th

 A moderate W.S.W. wind with light snow  first part. Latter part hauled to the W.N.W. and increased to a strong gale. Piled the ice on the sandspit about 15 feet high Cloudy. Finishing up the house. A very high tide, water raised  above the ice, between the ship and shore

Saturday Oct. 21st

Yesterdays [sic] gale died away first part Latter part light and variable airs. Cloudy and Clear. Finished the house. Carted 3 loads of ice.

Sunday Oct. 22nd

 Calms and light airs. Clear. Cutting ice for water during the winter I got 4 ducks.

Monday Oct. 23rd

 A light breeze from the E.  Cloudy and Clear. At work on a fore hatch. Two men deserted in the night. Michael Mckracken and George Starr. They broke open the warehouses and Stmr Narwhals ice house. Stealing 2. 45/70 Rifles a case of cartridges, Knifes, Tobacco &c. Last seen at 8 A.M.

Wednesday Oct. 24th

A  light breeze from the E. Clear and Cloudy.  Cleaned out the Ice House.  Found about  60 Deer spoilt. Capt. Tilton started after the deserters, Found them about 6 miles from The Ship at Newbooaluc. They got the “drop” on him with a Rifle and he returned without them The two desperate and say they will Not return. Carted 3 loads of ice.

Wednesday Oct 25th

Light breeze from the W. Cloudy with snow squalls. At work on the fore hatch. Built an Ice Bench. Carted all the deer from the icehouse to the ship. Received a message from  The Deserters in the shape of a cartridge by a Cogmulluc Indian                                                  

Thursday Oct. 26th

 Light breeze from the W. Clear  At work on  the hatch. oddjob &c.

Friday Oct. 27th

A moderate E.S.E. breeze. Cloudy. Carted a load of ice.Put ice over the skylights. Unisuck arrived with 8 saddles of deer.

Saturday Oct. 28th

Calms and light airs till 3 P.M. then a wind sprang up from the W.N.W. accompanied with snow.  Clear and Cloudy The Deserters returned and delivered up their Rifles. One George Starr’s feet Slightly frozen. Put them in “Irons”.

Sunday Oct. 29th

 A light S.E. breeze. Clear and cloudy. Finished the Bob sleds Cutting ice for winter use. Open water off N. side of Island. Sapsuk arrived with 3 deer and 2 saddles.

Monday Oct. 30th

 Light and variable airs. Cloudy and Clear. Carting ice.

Tuesday 31th

Light and variable airs. Clear. Carting ice. Working on the fore hatch. Got steam on the donkey Boiler. and pumped ship.

  Light airs from W. first part. Latter part calm Cloudy and snowing. Finished fore hatch. Set up wind gauge. Anemoneter

Thursday  Nov. 2d

 Light and variable winds. Cloudy.  Carted a load of ice. Put up a stove in the  Wheelhouse. Saw a large flock of Eider Duck Killed 10.

Friday Nov. 3d

 Light breeze from the E. Snowing lightly all day. Cloudy. Building a sled. Working on doorway into wheelhouse.

Saturday Nov. 4th

Calms and light airs from the W. Cloudy with a heavy fog Carting ice.

Sunday  Nov. 5th

A moderate S.E. breeze Clear. Carted 2 loads of ice. 8 Inland Native sleds arrived. I killed 2 ducks.

Monday Nov. 6th       

Light breeze from the W. Velocity 7.9 miles per hour.Cloudy. Killed 87 ducks in a water Hole off the east end of Island.

Tuesday Nov. 7th

Light N.W. wind. Cloudy and spitting snow. 2 families Nunatagmutes arrived.

Wednesday Nov. 8th

Calm and light airs from the W. Velocity 1 ½ miles per hour. Clear   Carting ice.

Thursday Nov. 9th

Light breeze from the W. Velocity 5.42 miles per hour. Cloudy  Oublonc dropped dead this morning, on the sandspit A Numatagmute.

Friday Nov. 10th

Calms and light and variable airs.  Velocity for 24 hours 3.6 mile  Cloudy Killed 2 seals and 2 ducks. Rev. I.O. Stringer arrived from Fort Mcpherson.  Brought a mail.

Saturday Nov. 11th

A strong E.N.E. wind. Velocity 16.35 miles per hour. Cloudy and spitting snow latter part. Carted a load of ice.

Sunday Nov. 12th

 Light breeze from the W.N.W. Velocity 6.8 miles per hour. Cloudy and  misty.

Monday Nov. 13th

 A moderate gale from the E.S.E. Velocity for 24 hours 10.9 miles per hour. Last 6 hours 32.08 Cloudy and misty.

Tuesday Nov. 14th

Dying away of yesterdays gale first part. At 9 P.M. hauled to the W.N.W. A strong breeze. Velocity 23.8 miles per hour Cloudy and misty.

Wednesday Nov. 15th

A strong W.N.W. wind. Velocity 23.24 miles per hour Cloudy and snowing.

Thursday Nov. 16th

Calm first part. Latter part moderate E. wind. Velocity 8.7 miles per hour. Clear,  Cloudy and misty.

Friday Nov. 17th

A moderate E. wind, latter part died away. Velocity 16.1 miles per hour. Cloudy and misty. Carted a load of ice.

Light breeze from the E.S.E. Velocity 8.54 miles per hour.  Clear and Cloudy A large body of open water off the North side of Island Nothing but young ice in sight.

Light and variable winds. Velocity 1.98 miles per hour. Cloudy with a heavy fog.

Tuesday Nov. 21st

 A moderate W.N.W. wind. Velocity 12.75 miles per hour Cloudy and snowing.

Wednesday  Nov. 22d

Light breeze from the E.S.E. Velocity 8.27 miles per hour. Cloudy and fog first part. Latter part clear. Carted a load of ice. Attended Rev. Stringers farewell sermon in the evening

Thursday Nov. 23d

 A moderate E.S.E. wind Velocity 13.71 miles per hour. Clear. Rev. Mr. Stringer left for Home Took a mail.

Friday Nov. 24th

A moderate E.S.E. wind Velocity 10.8 miles per hour Clear.                              

Saturday  Nov. 25th

Calms and light airs from S.W. Cloudy and snowing heavily. 7 Itcillic sleds arrived last night.


Sunday  Nov. 26th

Light Westerly airs. Cloudy, misty and clear. Working the lathe. Banked ship. Put Herman Vogle, Steward, in the forecastle for stealing rum, and getting drunk. Cook acting steward and Walter Davis cook.Blacksmith and Martin Blair drunk  Blacksmiths head hurt quite badly by falling against the stove.

Open water outside of the Island.

 Light breeze from the W. Velocity 4.04 miles per hour Cloudy and spitting snow. Covered the Poop with snow. Carted a load of ice.

 Tuesday Nov. 28th

 Light E.S.E. wind  Velocity 4.85 miles per hour Clear.

Wednesday  Nov. 29th

A gentle breeze from the E.S.E. Velocity 7.25 miles per hour. Clear Sun did not come  in sight today. Got steam on the donkey Boiler And run a heater around forward end of house. Discontinued Engine and Steerage  stoves.

Thursday Nov. 30th

A light breeze from the E.S.E. Velocity 3.89 miles per hour. Clear. Attended a minstrel  Show on Stmr Balaena given by the Original Christy Minstrels of Herschel Island.
