A light wind from the W. Cloudy Cabin boy sick. Men reported sick with scurvy. on Stmr. Grampus Great excitement coasting and Skiing.

First part light and variable airs. Latter part a fresh breeze from W.N.W Cloudy Cabin boy on duty again. Started game of Baseball Officers  Against boat steerers Officers beaten by 1 run

Tuesday  Feb. 20TH

A terrific gale from the W.N.W. Clear, but lots of snow drifting The anemometer wrenched off the  house and broken.

Wednesday  Feb. 21st

 Light breeze from the E.S.E. Clear. Jack Reagan and Cockney of the Stmr. Narwhal got lost in yesterdays gale. Jack froze to death andCockney brought his body to the Ship. Cockneys, Hands and feel badly frozen.

Thursday  Feb. 22d          

  A moderate W.N.W. wind. Cloudy.  Men digging a grave for Jack.

Friday  Feb. 23d

Light breeze from the W.  Cloudy. Pumped Ship with donkey pump. Buried Jack Reagan of Stmr. Narwhal. Nearly all the men in the fleet at the funeral.

Calm. Clear. The Arctic and Pick Ups played a matched game of Ball. The Arctics won with a score of 13.  to 11.

Friday   March 16th 

moderate W.N.W. wind.  Clear.  Carted a load of ice.

Saturday  Mar. 17th          

Calm and Clear. Herschels and Northern Lights played a game of Ball. Herschels won. Score 31 to 8. In the afternoon the Herschels and  Arctics played. Arctics won. Score 20 to 14.

 Calm till 9 P.M. Then a strong breeze suddenly came from the N.W. Clear and Cloudy.

Indians that went  with Mr. Mogg arrived with 3 ½ deer and nine rabbits.

Wednesday  Mar. 21st

A strong W.N.W. gale, but moderated latter part. At 5 P.M. calm. Clear.             

Thursday  Mar. 22d

Calm. Fritz, Sapsuk and [Samivictook?] started for a hunt and to take provisions to Mr. Mogg. The Northern Light [sic] and Pick Ups Played a game of Ball. The Northern Lights won.  Score 42. to [4?]

Friday  Mar. 23d   

Calm most of the day. Latter part light S.E. wind. Clear and Cloudy Open water off N. side I killed 2 Seals but did not get them. The Herschels and Pick Ups

 played a game of Ball Herschels won  39 to 23. 

Saturday  Mar. 24th

Calm first part. Latter part a  Very strong W.N.W. wind. Clear.                       

Sunday  Mar. 25th

Calm.  Clear. Open water off N. side of Island. The Pick Ups and Roaring Gimlets played a game of ball. Roaring Gimlets won  Score 24. to 21. The Herschels and Northern Lights played, Herschels won Score 24 to 11.

Monday  Mar. 26th

Calm and Clear first part. Latter part a moderate E.N.E. breeze Cloudy. The Jeannette and Karluk crew started to build an ice house. 4 Itcallie sleds arrived last night from Peel River.

Tuesday  Mar. 27th

Calms and light and variable airs. Cloudy.   Carted a load of ice.

Wednesday  Mar. 28th

A light W.N.W.  wind first part. Latter part Light and variable airs. 5 sleds arrived from inland bringing deer The Northern Lights and Arctics played a game of Ball. Score 11To 8. 7 Innings.

Thursday  Mar. 29th

Started with a light E.S.E. wind but suddenly changed to the W.N.W. and blew a  gale. about  4 P.M. moderated to a light breeze and hauled to the N.N.W. Cloudy and snowing most of the day. The Herschels and Arctics played a game of Ball. Herschels won score 30 to 24. 6 sleds of Itcallies arrived and one White man. Mr.  Funston a Collector for the Smithsonian Institute.

Friday  Mar. 30th

A strong E.S.E. wind. Cloudy and misty. Broke out Fire Clay, cement and Lime  for the Engine Room.

Saturday   Mar. 31st     

 A strong E.S.E. wind first part.  Latter part light W.N.W. wind. Clear, Cloudy and fog.Caught 1 white fox and the foot  of another. Small holes of open water off N. side of Island

A gentle breeze from the E.S.E. Clear.  Open water outside of the Island. Samictook  went after more deer. 4 Nunatagmute families arrived.

Sunday  Apr. 15th

A moderate breeze from the N.W. Cloudy and spitting snow latter part. Count De Salville arrived from Peel River. 14 days on the road. Heard of Queen Victorias and vice Presidents death.   [ A Hoax]

Monday  Apr. 16th

A moderate breeze from the N. Cloudy and snowing. Broke out the fore hold and put  the coal in the Bunkers.

Tuesday  Apr. 17th

A moderate N.W. wind.  Clear.  Carted a load of ice. Cleaned and restowed fore hold. [Kingouwak?], one of the Native crew died at 3.15 P.

Wednesday  Apr. 18th

 A strong W.N.W. wind but moderated the latter part. Clear.Buried Kingouwak at  3.30 P.M.

Thursday  Apr. 19th

A strong W.N.W. wind which increased to a moderate gale latter part. Clear, Cloudy and misty.

 Friday  Apr. 20th

A strong W.N.W. gale. Cloudy and misty.

Saturday  Apr. 21st

 A strong W.N.W. wind. Cloudy and misty. Fritz, Sapsuka and [Sanicictook?] arrived brought in 7 deer.

Sunday  Apr. 22d

 Calm      Clear.   Carted a load of ice. Brought in all my Traps. 12 foxes The Arctics and Northern Lights played A game of Ball. Arctics won Score 7 to 2.


Monday Apr 23

Calm  Clear  Carted a load of ice. Put 16 deer in ice house. Count De Salville left for Fort Mcpherson The Herschels and North Stars played a game of Ball. Herschels won  Score 39 to 6.

Tuesday  Apr. 24th

Calm first part Latter part a light air  from the E.N.E. Clear  Took 80 tons and 963 lbs of coal from  ashore.

Wednesday  Apr. 25th

A moderate breeze from the E.N.E.  Cloudy and spitting snow Pumped Ship.

Thursday  Apr. 26th

  A moderate E.N.E. wind. Cloudy and misty. I started on a hunting trip accompanied by  Mr. White of the Jeanette. Jones and two Indians. Ketchictuck arrived with 3 deer.

A strong breeze from W.N.W. which increased to a moderate gale. Cloudy and snowing Commenced to take down the banking on Starboard side.

Started in with a moderate gale from the [W.N.-] but moderated to a light breeze latter part.Cloudy and snowing. One of Jeannettes [sic] natives shot a bear on West side of Island.

Sunday  Apr. 29th

Calm till 3 P.M. then sprang up from the W.N.W. a light breeze. Clear Ned and  Fritz went to mainland and returned with 4 deer.

A moderate breeze from the N.W. Cloudy and misty  25 Itcallie sleds arrived with deer Meat. 3 aboard the Newport.

Friday  May 4th

A moderate N.W. wind which nearly died away about 4 P.M. Cloudy. Finished taking the banking away from ship.

Saturday  May 5th

 A moderate N.W. wind. Cloudy. At work on odd jobs about ship. I slid down a cliff and hurt my leg while hunting grouse. Cut a gash about 2 inches by  2 ½ inches another way and about ½ inch wide. Didn’t walk f for about a  week.     

Sunday May 6th

A light breeze from the W.N.W. Clear The Herschels and Arctics played a game of ball. Arctics won score 36. To 22  A Punk game.

Monday  May 7th

 A moderate breeze from the W.N.W. Cloudy and snowing lightly. Carpenter put in new skylight over aftercabin. Mr. Allen working on barrels for ballast and taking sand ballast.

Tuesday  May 8th

 Light E.S.E. wind Cloudy and snowing lightly. Still at work on barrels and taking ballast. Water coming up on the starboard side                                           

Wednesday  May 9th

Light breeze from the N.W. Cloudy and snowing latter part. Commenced to dig a trench on the Port Side.

Thursday  May 10th

 A light breeze from the N.W. Clear. Cleared the sods, snow and gravel off the Poop Deck. Mr. Allen getting water casks in order.

Friday  May 11th

Calm Clear Commenced tearing down the house on forward deck.Finished trenching around ship. Repairing casks. I returned from hunting trip, brought home on the sled.

Saturday  May 12th

Calm first part. Latter part a strong S.W. wind, which hauled to the W.N.W. Clear Cloudy and snowing lightly. Sawed out the stern. Making dog has messes. Finished taking down the house.

Sunday  May 13th

 A strong W.N.W. wind which moderated the latter part. Cloudy and Clear.Snowing lightly first part. 2 Itcallie sleds arrived about mid night. Ship broke out of her ice bed forward Came up seven inches.

Monday  May 14th

Cloudy, snowing lightly and Clear Stowing Casks, Beef, Pork, and other stores in fore hold. Ketchictuck, Seningetook arrived after dawn The Itcallies left for home Fritz and Sapsuk left for a hunt.

Tuesday May 15               

Calm till latter part then a light breeze sprang up from the E.S.E. Cloudy, heavy fog and snowing light Dug out  the boats and turned them over. Commenced to saw out  the Starboard side.  Took Butter &c aboard.

Wednesday  May 16th

Light Easterly airs. Clear. Sawing out the Starboard side. Clearing out the boats. Mr. Allen getting out timbers for skids forward.

Thursday  May 17th

A light breeze from the E.S.E. Cloudy and fog. Still sawing on Starboard side  A light breeze from the E.S.E. Cloudy and fog. Still sawing on Starboard side.Mr. Allen at work on skids.

Friday  May 18th

Light E.N.E. wind. Cloudy and fog. Sawing the ice on the Starboard side. Carpenter putting a grating over the rudder. Open water off North side of Island Killie arrived with grouse, skins and fish

Saturday  May 19th

A light breeze from the N.N.E. Cloud. Pumped Ship with donkey pumps and steamed out the casks in for hold. Mr. Allen still at work on skids. Fritz and Sapsuk arrived with 1 moose. Brought on word that Tommy Newport, the ships Steerage Boy, accidentally shot Plow-cock and Indian boy, and killed him. Lived 4 hours after being shot. Killie left for hunting.

Sunday May 20

A moderate breeze from the E.N.E. Cloudy and spitting snow. Mr’s, Mulligan, Edson  and Montgomery started on a hunt to the mainland.Fritz and Sapsuk left again.

Monday  May 21st

A strong breeze from the E.N.E. Cloudy and snowing but cleared the latter part. Carpenter at work on grating aft.

Tuesday  May  22d

A strong E.N.E. wind. Clear.Packed and carted 2 loads of ice. 2 men deserted from Stmr. Karluk.

Wednesday  May 23d

A strong E.N.E. wind. Clear. Sawing and cutting ice around ship. Clear all around  and got her bearings. Unbent the Spanker and dried it. Large body of open water off  N. side of Island.

Thursday  May 24th

A strong breeze from the E.N.E. Cloudy Cleaned out fore peak. Painted ice saws and finished grating aft. Sapsuk arrived with 6 deer. Capt. Tilton started on a hunt accompanied by Capt.Leavitts

Friday  May  25th

A moderate breeze from the E.Clear Making iron work for skids.and doing odd jobs.

Saturday  May 26th

A strong breeze from the E.N.E. Cloudy and Clear. Mr. Allen finished skids. Blacksmithing, making tent poles &c. Semingetook arrived with 10 deer First arrival of geese, four. Painted Capt. and Mr. Moggs room.

Sunday  May 27th

A moderate breeze from the E.N.E. which hauled to the N.E. latter part. Cloudy. snow, rain and hail. Fritz and Sapsuk arrived with 4 sleds bringing 28 deer.

Mondy May 28

A light breeze from the N.E. Cloudy. Light rain and fog. Put the iron work on the skids Cleaned out the wheel house and painted my room Fritz and Sapsuk left for more Deer Pumped ship with donkey pump Jags arrived with 7 dee

Tuesday May  29th

A strong breeze from the N.E. till latter part then hauled to the N.N.W. Cloudy and Snowing heavily till 9 P.M. Cleared. Painting my room, alleyway and wheelhouse

Wednesday  May 30th

Gradual dying away of yesterdays breeze. Latter part hauled to E.S.E. a strong  Breeze. Cloudy Blacksmithing, setting glass. Loosed sails to dry. Cut the spanker over and made a mutton leg of it. Semingetook arrived with 8 deer.

Thursday  May 31st

A strong E.S.E. wind but died away to a light breeze latter part. Clear. First good signs of thawing. Blacksmithing, sail repairing carpentering and overhauling Blocks. Capt. Tilton arrived from hunting trip, brought a few



Friday  June 1st

Calm and light Easterly airs. Clear. Scraping masts overhauling blocks. Blacksmithing &c. Ned Arey left for a load of deer First summer day water running off the ice quite fast.

Saturday  June 2d

 

A moderate breeze from the E.S.E. Cloudy with fog and clear. Sail repairing, scraping masts and Blacksmithing. Got water from ashore.

 Sunday June 3

A moderate breeze from the E. Clear. Ice flooding quite rapidly. Put George Shank ashore sick with the scurvy.

Monday June 4

A light N.E. wind. Cloudy and raining latter part. Tide perceivable on the ice, rise & fall. Sail repairing blacksmithing scraping &c. Fritz and Sapsuk arrived with 17 Deer. 18 other sleds arrived. report rivers running. Got Steam on the boiler and Turned over the Engines. everything worked fine.

Tuesday  June 5th

Calm and Clear first part. Latter part a strong N.N.W. wind. Clear. Sail repairing, scraping, blacksmithing &c. Fritz and Sapsuk left to tend [hunt?] Water running lively off the land.

Tuesday June 6

A strong gale from the W.N.W. Cloudy and snowing first part Jags arrived with 8 deer.

Thursday June 7

A light breeze from the W.N.W. which hauled to the N.N.W. latter part. Cloudy Shifted the potatoes from one ice house into Capt Newths. Blacksmithing and  odd jobs. All of our deer hunters returned. also Fritz, Ned, Sapsuk and Semngetook brought in 11 deer. Mr. Mulligan returned brought a few ducks and geese.

Friday  June 8

Light airs varying from W.N.W. to N.W. Clear, Cloudy and fog squalls. Sail repairing, blacksmithing, drying line Painting yards and mastheads. Bent my new boatsail.

Saturday  June 9th

Light breeze from the N.N.W. first part. Latter part hauled to the E.S.E. Cloudy and fog squalls. Blacksmithing sail repairing. Shifted firemans berths into 

Steerage Set up main and mizzen standing rigging.Finished painting mast heads.

Sunday June 9

A moderate breeze from the E.S.E. Cloudy. The Indian boy hunter arrived with 7 deer Michael Mckraken sick with scurvy.

Monday  June 11th

 A moderate breeze from the E.N.E. Cloudy. Blacksmithing. Scraping Bone.

Tuesday  June 12th

A moderate E. wind. Clear. Finished taking water 250 barrels.Scraping bone  Rigged the starboard ventilator for an ash chute.

Saturday  June 16th

A very strong breeze from the W.N.W. Cloudy. Scraping Bone. Capt. Tilton and Norwood started for the Mackenzie river. Had to haul the boats about 4 miles over the ice. Each took one white man and rest of crew Indians

Sunday  June 17th

Started with a strong W.N.W. wind,but moderated to a light  breeze latter part. Cloudy          

Monday  June 18th

Calm first part, Latter part a moderate breeze from the E.N.E. Cloudy and fog after 3 P.M. Finished scraping bone. Washed ship and put bone to soak.

Got steam on main boiler and turned Engine over. Tuesday  June 19th A light breeze from the N.E. Cloudy and heavy fog. Washing bone. Capt. Tilton returned to N. side of Island, and sent Ned into ship. Could not get up the River. Going to the Westward. Killed 3 polar Bears. “Jags” arrived, Brought 115 fish.

Wednesday  June 20th

Calm and light and variable airs. Clear. Washing Bone.

Thursday  June 21st

Calm and light but variable airs. Clear. Repairing boats and putting spades in order Capt. Tilton arrived, could not get up the River. Set the nets, fish quite  plentiful.

Friday  June 22d

Calm first part Latter part a  light breeze from the N.N.E. Cloudy and heavy fog. Washing Bone. Repairing boats.

Light and variable airs. Clear and foggy. Brought the boat home from the flow.

Monday  June 25                                           

A strong breeze from the W.N.W.  Cloudy and foggy. Finished washing Bone. Took stores aboard for summer use. Jags, Unisuck and abouk arrived  Brought   295 Fish.

Tuesday  June 26th 

Light breeze from the N.N.W. which hauled to E. latter part. Cloudy and Clear. Restowed the store house.  Coiled lines, and seized off the Rigging.

Wednesday  June 27th

A moderate breeze from the E.N.  Heavy fog till 2 P.M. then cleared. Set up topmast rigging, Rove new cutting and boat falls. making line covers, and painting boats and overhead in cabin.

Thursday  June 28th

 Calm and Clear first part. Latter part a light N.N.W. wind Heavy fog about 4 P.M.Bundling Bones. 160 bundles weiging [sic] about 15,000 lbs. Paintingbaround cabin and also Boats.

Friday  June 29

A moderate breeze from the N.N.W. Cloudy and fog till 9 A.M. then Clear  Finished bundling Bone, 326 bundles. Which weighed 30.233. Lbs. Painting.

Saturday  June 30th

A moderate breeze from the N.N.W. Cloudy. Tarred down main and mizzen Rigging Ratlining the topmast rigging Painting &c. Filled up the water tank. Set

 up a deck pump.
